Remove Excess Fat, Improve Jawline

You need a strong chin and jawline for a proportional and harmonious facial appearance. But as you grow older, your body undergoes numerous changes. The accumulation of fat cells in the submental region can lead to a double chin, and the gradual loss of collagen can lead to sagging skin. Submentoplasty is suitable for patients with a poor chin and neck profile because it can reduce excess fat cells and strengthen the jawline.

What is Submentoplasty?

Submentoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to improve the appearance of the chin and jawline. The procedure can involve either the reduction or the augmenting of the chin. In some cases, both procedures may be performed. The goal of submentoplasty is to create a more proportional and harmonious appearance to the face. Generally speaking, submentoplasty involves making a strategic incision under the chin to remove excess skin and fat deposits, following which the underlying muscles are tightened.

Benefits of Submentoplasty:

One of the main benefits of submentoplasty is that it can help to create a more youthful appearance. Because the procedure removes excess skin and fat from the chin and jawline, it can help to tighten up these areas and create a more defined look. This can be especially beneficial for those who have lost a significant amount of weight, as it can help to “finish” the weight loss transformation.

The following are some of the benefits of submentoplasty:

  • Improve overall facial contours
  • Remove excess fat deposits from the chin and neck
  • Tighten up the chin and jawline and create a more defined look
  • Reduce the appearance of a “turkey wattle” or “double chin”
  • Minimal scarring because the incisions are concealed along the natural creases of the skin
  • Minimal recovery period and downtime

The Submentoplasty Surgical Process

During a submentoplasty, the surgeon will make an incision either in the crease under the chin or inside the lower lip. Through this incision, the surgeon will sculpt the chin to the desired shape. In some cases, the surgeon may use a cannula to suction away excess fat cells, insert an implant to improve the projection of the chin or tighten the underlying muscles. Once the surgeon is happy with the results, the incisions will be closed with stitches. The entire procedure concludes within an hour.

Submentoplasty: Recovery & Downtime

Recovery from a submentoplasty is typically fairly quick and easy. The stitches will be removed after approximately five to seven days. There may be some bruising and swelling around the chin, but this should resolve within a week or two. Most people can return to their normal activities within a week. However, it’s important to avoid strenuous activity or exercise for at least two weeks to give the incisions time to heal properly.
